The Spicer’s come from a long line of sailors and craftsmen and it was commonplace that one of their own would seek his own fortune in a new world. John Alden arrived on board as the 21 year old cooper, or barrel-maker, for the Mayflower’s voyage to America. It is said that he was the first to set foot on Plymouth rock, he was one of the founders of the Plymouth Colony, and he was seventh to sign the Mayflower Compact. He later married Priscilla Mullins and they came to be known as “America’s First Couple”.
